As with any awards, there are those you expect to win and those who completely surprise you, but for our Creative Content Manager Emily Perkins, The SPARKies 2018 was a night of surprises – even though she acted as judge for two of the categories.
The venue this year was Motion, and provided an incredible experience in the lazy summer sun to drink, munch on the delicious food in the Terrace, and chat with the best and brightest in the tech scene in the South West.
The TechSPARKteam completely knocked it out the park this year, with creative design, an expo for VR and AR, and absolutely delicious food (OggaDoon approved!) – so a huge congratulations to Sarah, Ben, and their team for pulling together another stunning evening.
Of course, I was unable to discuss my role as judge before the winners were announced, but even I wasn’t given the details of who had won, despite my very polite pestering of Sarah! It was therefore a huge pleasure to see Storm recognised for their work by winning the Best Digital Design Award and Duelfor Best Marketing Campaign Award – two South West companies rivalling the work coming out of London, New York, and Paris in their creativity and inclusivity.
But in many ways, that wasn’t what excited me the most: the women in tech were recognised in an almost unparalleled way this way, with winners including Zara Nanu of Gapsquarefor Founder/ Entrepreneur of the Year and the Good Award, Georgia Stewart for FutureSPARK, and Becky Sage picking up the award for Most Exemplary use of VR & AR on behalf of her company iSci.
Gender diversity were also seen in teams attending (and winning!), including Ultrahaptics, Open Bionics, and Immersive Labs. The Women’s Tech Hub was well represented, and the host for the night, Jayde Adams, proved that no matter their size or gender, it is always a crowd pleaser when you belt out an impeccable and comedic version of Nessum Dorma…
