Objective

The inventors of the world’s first smart bird feeder fuelled by AI, Bird Buddy, had almost everything in place: a tight-knit team of founders, a brilliantly fun idea for a consumer tech product, a community desperate to show support and a campaign about to go live on crowdfunding platform Kickstarter.

However, what was lacking was tier 1 editorial media coverage that would lend credibility, authenticity and third-party endorsement to the Bird Buddy brand.

Key elements

Editorial coverage including page leads in tier 1 titles including Metro, The Times, The Sun and Stuff Magazine, with a total MUV (monthly unique views) score of 76.5m.

Bird Buddy’s Kickstarter campaign smashed its initial target of £40k within 30 minutes of going live, finally closing on £3.5m, making it Kickstarter’s most successful crowdfunding campaign for a gadget ever.

Challenges

Our early sessions with Bird Buddy’s founders revealed not only their skills, tech backgrounds and qualifications for launching the product, but also their passion for “birding” and commitment to drag this most traditional of hobbies into the 21st century. Our research into the subject also showed us that, thanks largely to lockdown restrictions, bird watching or “birding” was witnessing a massive surge in popularity, both here in the UK and worldwide. The challenge was to make a splash in a disrupted media landscape with no ‘previous success’ to use as leverage.

Strategy

We crafted compelling narratives around Bird Buddy’s founders, the massive spike in interest for birding and the just-launched crowdfunding campaign before approaching our national media and consumer tech and AI contacts.

With funding in place and thousands of backers, the Bird Buddy smart bird feeder is into full production phase. To generate even more coverage Oggadoon has lined up reviewers at some of the UK’s biggest and most influential media outlets who are champing at the bit to test the product.
