The Objective

When independent brewing company, Strange Times, approached us for help generating PR interest around their upcoming kickstarter campaign, we jumped at the chance. Launched during the pandemic, the beer brand was brewing up some interesting and creative ideas and we wanted to be right there with them as they grew.

Our first job was to create an integrated digital campaign to raise awareness and interest in the Strange Times brand, and its short-term crowdfunding goals of raising enough for a canning machine and its stretched goal of achieving £40k to aid international expansion. To do this, we needed to increase their followers, contacts and fan base in the preparation period of 5 weeks, ready for the start of the live campaign that would convert fans into active backers.

Results

Strange Times wanted to raise enough money to buy a canning machine and then gain additional funding for their national expansion. They did reach their main goal to buy a canning machine so they were able to reward their investors and move forward to the next phase of growth.

From a PR perspective, Strange Times had 16 articles across national and trade publications. Throughout the campaign we raised the Strange Times profile, with 160 regional and trade journalists. We also increased the brand’s email open rate to 44.3% compared to an industry average of 21.3%, and its click-through rate to 3.4% compared to an industry average of 2.9%. Now, Strange Times content has reached an estimated +145 million consumers through this media outreach whereas before it was mostly known where its beers were sold.

Challenges

Political instability, seasonality and other promotional noise are key external factors that can affect a comms campaign. The Strange Times team, whilst running their campaign, was competing with both regional and national noise from The World Cup and the cost of living crisis, etc. From the international perspective Black Friday, Cyber Monday and the war in the Ukraine will have distracted eyeballs from the campaign. Despite this, Strange Times gained coverage and raised enough to get its canning machine.

Strategy

We utilised traditional and guerrilla PR tactics to increase the reach of the Strange Times brand proposition, crowdfund reinforcing product, and operational credibility through the trade, regional and national press.
