Go-op, a pioneering open access railway operator, had spent over ten years developing a route to connect poorly served stations in the West Country when they approached OggaDoon for our PR services. The first co-operative rail operator in the country, their mission is particularly easy for anyone to get behind: to reduce the social and environmental impacts of travel by providing mutually owned, high-quality, and inclusive public transport services that encourage people to choose sustainable transport options. The OggaDoon team was thrilled to be along for the ride and support their Crowdfunder launch, helping to spread the message of their exciting initiative which aims to revolutionise rail services in the South West.
The mission: to make an impact
In late 2024, Go-op finally received the go-ahead from The Office of Rail and Road (ORR) – Britain’s railway regulator – to start making their planned direct services between Swindon and Taunton a reality. This milestone marked a crucial moment for the organisation, as they prepared to officially launch their Crowdfunder campaign to fund public transport that will be owned by passengers and workers. Immediately as the news of the ORR’s decision came in, OggaDoon took to spreading news of the announcement to national, regional and transport sector specific press outlets.
A step-by-step plan
Our plan was to tackle our work with Go-op in stages. The first stage was pushing the news of the ORR announcement, and it successfully landed in the likes of BBC News, BBC Points West, ITV and The Guardian. Stage two was preparing for the Crowdfunder campaign, and the third stage was the actual launch. To help maximise the impact of the Crowdfunder launch, OggaDoon stepped in to provide a range of strategic PR and communications services. Our team has worked closely with Go-op to craft compelling press releases and other written materials for their website and Crowdfunder page, ensuring their mission and goals are clearly communicated to potential supporters.
We also developed a tailored social media strategy at the beginning of the campaign, creating engaging content to generate buzz and encourage contributions. Additionally, we’ve built press lists, researched potential investors and stakeholders, and facilitated key media connections by reaching out to journalists, setting up interviews, and securing coverage in relevant publications. Our involvement also extended to attending events, where we helped amplify Go-op’s message and connect them with potential investors and other influential voices in the transport sector.
The results
After a strong launch to their Crowdfund, it has been amazing to see Go-op receive widespread acclaim and backing from communities across Somerset and Wiltshire. Support has poured in from individuals, businesses, and local city councils, highlighting the widespread enthusiasm for a more sustainable and community-owned rail service. The positive press coverage has further validated their efforts, with features in key national, regional and industry-specific publications bringing much-needed attention to their cause. From articles and in-depth interviews in Tier 1 publications like the BBC, The Telegraph and The Guardian, to transport and co-operative sector magazines to interviews on local radio, the media has played a crucial role in amplifying Go-op’s vision – all according to our plan.
At OggaDoon, we’re incredibly proud to be working with such an innovative and forward-thinking organisation. Seeing Go-op’s mission gain traction and support reinforces the power of effective PR services in bringing important initiatives to the forefront.
