WhatsApp will soon be launching their Channels feature after a successful beta run. The feature will allow you to follow other accounts, see the content they post, and then react to it. Channels will allow users to react to posts using emojis, not just limiting users to the “Like” button.

Channels will be a much more security-centric feature, with privacy at the heart. Channels will not have any information shared, so no user will be able to see what other users are following. However, when you follow a channel you will then have access to a recommended list of people or businesses to follow.

So will WhatsApp rival X and Threads?

It is far too soon to tell how well the new feature will perform. When Threads burst on to the seen with 100 million users in its first week, it was assumed that Twitter/X would suffer, but it has since been found that 79% of Threads users are now inactive. Will WhatsApp Channels label itself as a competitor? Will take up be high? Will social media marketing find a new tool to directly reach customers? We don’t know the answers yet, but it’s exciting to see what this new feature will bring to the tech world and social media marketing.
