Twitter has been a very controversial app for a couple of years and in October 2022 Elon Musk bought the company. After several divisive changes on the platform, he recently restricted the number of tweets users can see in a day. Unverified accounts can read up to 1,000 tweets a day but verified accounts can view 10,000 tweets in the same period. People are questioning why he has done this and they are looking for alternatives to Twitter.
Meta has announced a new social media ‘Threads’ to compete with Twitter
Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, is going to launch a new social media called ‘Threads.’ The app went live on Thursday 6th July and is meant to be Mark Zuckerberg’s alternative to Twitter.
Bluesky is becoming more popular as Twitter users are looking for a substitute
Bluesky is quite similar to Twitter. It gives users the chance to have followers and follow other accounts and they can repost rather than retweet and quote posts instead of quote tweets. Due to the changes in rules on Twitter, many people are choosing to use Blueksky instead and Bluesky has even had to pause sign-ups after too many people have requested to join it.
Launched in January, Spill is an alternative to Twitter founded by ex-Twitter employees
Spill was founded by Alphonzo Terrell and DeVaris Brown who were both former Twitter employees. When Elon Musk took over, Alphonzo Terrell got laid off. He decided to make a new social media platform which is an anti-abuse app and aims to be more inclusive. More people are moving to Spill and in December 2022 it had 20,000 people on the waitlist to join.
