After months of planning, promoting, and preparation, TEDxBristol arrived faster than we had expected on 2nd November.  

The largest TEDx event in Europe, TEDxBristol took over Colston Hall for two days, and saw 16 speakers, hundreds of volunteers, and just under 3,000 delegates flock to the venue for this year’s theme: Dare to Disrupt.  

OggaDoon had been on board as official PR partners of TEDxBristol since April, following the sell-out success of our 2015 event. We set our sights high, to make this year’s PR pay-off even bigger and better than before.  

But of course, we never set ourselves an easy challenge. This year, TEDxBristol took place over two days instead of one, and with twice the amount of speakers to promote, and over 30 partners on board to support the non-profit event, it would have been easy to feel overwhelmed.  

But we didn’t With the help of six social media volunteers, and 17 student volunteers from Bath Spa University, OggaDoon took over the TEDxBristol social media channels for the second time.  

Picking up where TEDxBristol 2015 had left off, tickets were launched at Business Showcase South West in May 2017. From that point onwards, we planned and scheduled daily Twitter and Facebook posts, and sales and interest in the event took off to a flying start.  

As well as social media, it was our responsibility to get the press on board with TEDxBristol 2017. After a year off, there was considerable interest in the event, and with a few press releases and launch newsletters, Bristol was back in the TEDx swing of things.  

We hit summer hard As the date loomed ever closer, it was time to pick up the pace, and by the time of the official launch party in September, 15 speakers were confirmed, with 8 radio interviews, 2 TV appearances, 10 press stories, 8 Facebook Live chats, and countless blogs.  

To re-launch the TEDxBristol Instagram, we commissioned the expert skills of Jess Siggers of Igers Bristol, and alongside on-going social on Twitter and Facebook, the TEDxBristol following began to grow.  

The event began TEDxBristol 2017 took place on 2nd & 3rd November, and with the help of Bath Spa University’s Publishing students, we hit a record high on social media. Instagram hit the 500 follower target, gaining 293 new followers across the two days. Twitter mentions were up 500%, and the #daretodisrupt tag was trending in Bristol both days, with #tedxbristol catching up on Friday. Facebook impressions were through the roof at 43,820 across 72 posts – a 193% increase on our usual activity, and 829 engagements on Facebook posts.  

The amazing and inspiring two days were worth the wait. Our hard work paid off, with our curated Bath Spa students doing an incredible job of live tweeting every speaker, workshop, and activity happening across Colston Hall. On top of the pre-planned social, every corner of the event was documented, leaving those without tickets or watching on the live stream from home feeling major #FOMO.  

TEDxBristol goes to show what a dedicated team of volunteers can achieve with some good planning, strong leadership, and a top line-up of entertainment. We were delighted to provide all three, and we can’t wait to get started on the next one!
