In the past, social media has had issues with transparency. From fake news to labelling advertisements, you can’t always believe what you see on the internet. AI is proving to be the next things to challenge our perceptions of what is real and what is fake.
AI is developing at a rapid pace, and throughout social media, there are many use-cases. AI can be used to generate imagery, generate written content, create videos, and even create social media marketing strategy. One of the big tells that an image is AI generated is the hands! For some reason they are the stuff of nightmares! However, as the tech develops, this is an issue that is quickly being ironed over.
As AI becomes a bigger part of our lives, we will see a lot more of it on social media. Currently, Meta owned Instagram is working on a tool to label AI generated content so that users are more aware of the content that they consume. The notice will appear on Instagram posts that have been generated using AI tools. The notice can be set by the user to label that the image, text, or video was AI generated, otherwise Meta will try to pick it up (Using AI tools of its own).
AI has been revolutionary, and with the issues of media transparency in recent years, this is seen as a positive move. As artificial intelligence advances, it could become more challenging to distinguish between authentic and artificially generated media.
Could more AI labels be coming? Who knows! Meta, Google, Microsoft, and with other tech giants, made commitments to the responsible development of AI, including responsible use. So we may well see more ‘warning labels’ on the content we consume. One thing is for sure, and that is that we will keep you up to date will all things tech, all things AI, and all things digital.
