As PR partners for Vision 2017, host to the cream of creative talent for a day of leading international thought in creative business, we at OggaDoon had our fingers on the pulse of the buzz and ideas circulating around. Here we share our key ninja guerrilla communications tactics, which successfully got us trending on Twitter in the UK and continues to spur on the movement that is Vision.
A dual or multi-dimensional approach to engagement:
At OggaDoon, we are not about a one size fits all approach and go the extra mile to select and highlight the key information that will engage the media’s attention. Engaging press on a local and national level required a separate approach, since the appeal and attraction of Vision 2017 was clearly different for each audience. On the local level, we positioned Vision 2017 as a Bristol-centric event to be proud of, showcasing Bristol as a hotbed of innovative thought. On the national level, we targeted journalists and publications with the spotlight on the events international profile and level of influence. Common sense, but sometimes easy to miss if you are too busy focusing on pushing the key messages of the event itself. Essentially your press sell-in pitch can come earlier, and be incorporated into press releases tailored to the variables of your target audiences.
Find your natural event ambassadors
Obviously, you have key figures who are invested in the promotion of your event and will be willing to contribute to content and comment in the run up e.g. the keynote speakers, sponsors, and wider partners in the event. Beyond that though there is lots of opportunity to think more laterally along the theme of your event and interested parties or leading figures who are attending. Throughout the promotion of the event, we engaged with associated networks and beacon businesses via Twitter and LinkedIn, to drum up support. We interviewed business leaders addressing some of the most pertinent issues in creative business today, and on the day, we were ready with a camera and microphone to hear thoughts and feedback.
Be ready for anything – crises and opportunities
Key individuals are hard to pin down in the mayhem of the run up to the event, and press may be expected but last minute drop out is inevitable. Make sure you are on hand to cover the event regardless of press intentions – your audiences want to hear about it! Arrangements can be made for the day but as the event unfolds it usually takes on a plan of its own so flexibility is key. Stay focused yet be opportunistic. We had aims but nothing was set in stone. Armed with a microphone and camera, our live tweeting in over-drive, we managed to pin down some of the key speakers to capture talk highlights of the day on film. Not everyone is willing to be filmed and the technicalities of getting a good shot in a bustling environment is intense, but we find when there is a will and collaboration, there is always a way. We were able to load these up on Twitter immediately and spur on conversations already trending #VisionBristol in the top 10 of the UK.
It doesn’t stop – the aftermath and wind down
A thrilling speed of light round-up of key speaker takeaways and comments from the compère rounded off the live tweeting on the day of the event, and we happily called it a wrap. However, Twitter was active for days afterwards as attendees revelled and celebrated in the spirit of Vision 2017, sharing and spreading ideas with those who weren’t able to be there. Press are always keen to hear about what they missed and thanks to rave reviews from publications who attended, that we shared with the wider Vision audience on social channels, we could continue the conversation – and begin looking ahead to upcoming Vision events in the New Year.
We are chuffed to have been a part of making the day such a success, since ‘vision’ is a huge part of what we value in our business and with our clients. We work to make our clients’ vision a reality. Are you hosting an event? Find out more about what we do best at OggaDoon and download our free ebook on ‘7 easy PR wins for your event’.
